West Boca High Students: blueprints for altruism & Friday Night Lights...

It's a pleasing thing; altruism and service to the community from local High Schoolers.  At Boca West, Erin Locey and fellow student volunteers are doing their part:

For more than six months, Locey, 15, has been spearheading a collection drive to benefit the Orphans of War Campaign, a project of the American Health Association that donates goods to Iraq's orphanages.
"I became interested in the organization because I'm a part of the medical academy at my school, and we are required to have 50 volunteer hours for the year," said Locey, a high school freshman who lives west of Boca Raton. "I received Robert Gordon's name from the list of volunteer opportunities, so I contacted him."
Gordon, the association's founder, asked Locey to create Facebook, MySpace and Twitter pages for the group's campaigns.
"Once I began getting more involved with the organization, I attended meetings and fundraisers and decided to organize my own fundraiser for the cause, so myself, my mom and the other volunteers made suggestions about ways that I could get other students involved, which is where the idea for the Wal-Mart fundraiser came in," Locey said.

"With this fundraiser, it gets students involved, allows them to fulfill their volunteer obligation and also collects donations to ship to orphans of war overseas, along with monetary donations for shipping costs," Locey said.
Locey said she has learned from Gordon (who has visited the war-torn country) about the horrible living conditions that many children in Iraq have to endure.   read it all!

"Helping the orphans overseas makes me feel awesome because I couldn't imagine being without a family to care for me and feeling like I was all alone in the world," she said. "I know that the orphans will be extremely happy even with the tiniest present. ... It feels great knowing that I helped put a smile on their faces."
